NAPW Charitable FoundationTogether, we can make a difference!
Note from the President - Jennifer Smith -
It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing that Diane Lord (pictured at left with her chocolate lab Lady Guinevere) has decided to not seek re-election as the NAPW and NAPW Charitable Foundation Treasurer at the end of this current term in June 2006.I have known Diane for 13 years and have enjoyed every minute of time with her on both professional and personal levels. I had a chance to chat with Diane about this announcement and thought it would be a great idea to highlight her career and time with the NAPW in this edition of the Newsletter. May I now present…Diane Lord… Diane is a 27-year veteran of our dynamic recycling industry. She started her career with Fibres International in 1976 and continued with them through 1992. Diane then joined Ideal Paper NW and was with them until 2000 when the company was sold to Ideal Paper, Inc. (owned by Fibres Inc.). In 2002 when Fibers closed Ideal Paper Diane had a short stint with PNW Fibres, a Linden Enterprises company. In 2003, Diane joined JMK Fibers, LLC in Tacoma, WA, which happens to be in the same plant where she started her career with Ideal Paper NW. Diane’s NAPW tenure and work is impressive! When she first joined our group, she marked down on her application that she would be interested in helping the group on any of the committees. She also mentioned on this application that she thought it would be a good idea for the NAPW to have a monthly Newsletter. Diane now jokes that “you better be careful what you ask for” as her suggestion was well received, the Newsletter was born and Diane was asked to be the author and manager of this new project for the NAPW! In 1994, Jean Nunnellee nominated Diane for the Treasurer position…and so her official career with the NAPW Board began! Upon taking over the Treasurer duties, she also began managing the NAPW Members Binders and Members listing. Diane has a list of duties a mile long that she has given her time so selflessly to the NAPW over the years. Here are a few highlights… Diane wants all the Presidents she has worked with over her tenure to know that they are each wonderful in their own unique ways. She added that each President stayed focused on the Educational goal of our group and worked tirelessly on getting the NAPW name “out there” to generate more interest in our group. She is very thankful that each President was always open to new ideas and ventures, including the goal and accomplishment of setting up the NAPW Charitable Foundation. The Presidents that Diane has worked for are: Jean Nunnellee, 1994 – 1996 Nancy Grant, 1996 – 1998 Neala Hoch, 1998 – 2000 Trish Caparelli, 2000 – 2002 Antoinette Jucha, 2002 – 2004 Jennifer Smith, 2004 – 2006 I want to personally thank Diane for all of her personal time and energy she has given to our groups over the years. Diane may be stepping down as Treasurer, but she will continue working at JMK Fibers and promises to continue volunteering on committees and spreading the word about the NAPW to everyone associated with our recycling industry. We have two volunteers who have expressed interest in taking over the duties that Diane has performed as Treasurer. These wonderful people will be announced as we get closer to the nomination time for the 2006 – 2008 Board. Good Luck Diane! We all love you! West Coast Meeting Update It was mentioned in our last newsletter that Members have suggested we hold a meeting, or annual event on the east coast. This idea came up due to the fact that all NAPW meetings are held in the Midwest or East due to the location of industry conferences or events and some of our Members can’t make it to those areas of the country. Unfortunately, based on this announcement and request for further feedback from our last newsletter this idea has been temporarily sidelined due to a lack of response. However, this idea is still a good one that we would like to see come to fruition but we need feedback from our Members. Here are some questions we have for you. Please email your thoughts/answers to Jennifer Smith at jenniferj.smith@awin.com. Would you prefer weekday or weekend dates or a combination of the two? What type of event would you like to have or be willing to attend? How much would you be willing to pay? If we have a speaker, what type of topics would you like to see covered? Idea locations…suggest a city. Thanks for your input. Looking for a Volunteer to Manage Our Web Site Please contact Jennifer Smith if you are interested in volunteering your time to manage the updates on our web sit. We have a retainer, a great young lady in the Chicago area who will perform that actual work of our updates, but we need someone to communicate those updates/changes to her on a quarterly basis. Communication with our web sit administrator can be done over the phone or email. Thank you ahead of time for your much needed help. Happy Birthday to…
Update from Paper Recycling Conference The NAPW was once again represented at this annual conference and trade show. This year’s conference was held in Atlanta, GA and produced as always by GIE Media. We had a booth at the trade show portion of this event where we had an excellent location for high traffic and visibility. We had a few glitches in the set-up of our booth. A certain “over-night” delivery company lost the box of our give-away items, brochures and literature. They found it, but delivered it a day late. In the mean time, Linda Leone and Michelle Rurka of Solvay Paper and Nancy Grant did a great improvisation of working the booth with only our signage and spoke to a lot of people on that 1st day of the conference. In addition to Linda, Michelle and Nancy, I would like to thank Kim Kiaunis and the others from Canusa Hershman who volunteered their time to work the booth. If I missed your name, please let me know as I think you should all be recognized. Upcoming Scholarship Events – Please support our schools! As you are aware, the NAPW Charitable Foundation provides scholarships to deserving students in the Pulp & Paper Science programs at three Universities (NC State, SUNY and University of Quebec-Three Rivers). Two of these schools have their Annual Foundation meetings and Scholarship Events coming up this fall. First on the calendar is North Carolina State University on October 13 & 14. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Paper Science and Engineering programs and their Pulp & Paper Foundation. Over the past 50 years, 1400 students were introduced to the world of paper and science and most of these students are now holding jobs throughout our industry on a global level. Marita Daniels and Jennifer Smith will be attending this event on behalf of the NAPW and the NAPW Charitable Foundation. More details on the event will follow as soon as we receive it from NC State. They have always welcomed our group and we encourage as many NAPW Members as possible to join Marita and Jennifer in this special celebration at NC State. If you would like more information or would like to attend, please contact Jennifer Smith at jenniferj.smith@awin.com The University of New York at Syracuse (SUNY) will be holding their annual Scholarship Event October 20 –21. At this time, Linda Leone and Bob Carpenter of Solvay have volunteered to attend this function. SUNY welcomes any and all members of our group to attend as well. If you would like to join Linda and Bob for this event, please contact Jennifer Smith via email for further information. Helpful Hint: Since the winter will be here soon… For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won’t refreeze. Volunteers Needed To Be Featured in the Newsletter: We need volunteers that would like personally to be or their business to be featured in the newsletter. We have just started trying to get commitments from people and have been unsuccessful thus far. Please contact Pam Edwards (pam.edwards@weyerhaeuser.com) if you are interested in being featured. |
