NAPW Charitable FoundationTogether, we can make a difference!
Giving Back – by Jennifer Smith For those of us who at various times in our careers or lives have had to ask others for money for charity groups or to even help your children raise money for sports or clubs, we have all found ourselves at times in awkward positions. How do you ask? Do you start with an amount? When is the right/wrong time to ask? As we are moving forward with a new Board of Directors for the NAPW-Charitable Foundation I wanted to share two stories of generosity that defines the true meaning of “giving back”. The first happened at our New York luncheon in April. We held a 50/50 cash raffle with half of the money going to a lucky winner and the other half to the Charitable Foundation. We collected a total of $600 on this raffle and the lucky winner was Jeff Klein of The Boston Group who was awarded $300! But the NAPW-CF is really the lucky ones with Jeff’s win. Jeff took $50 of his winnings and paid for a new membership with the NAPW. Then he handed me the remaining $250 and donated it to the Charitable Foundation. Thank you Jeff and welcome to our organization! The second story that I would like to share is about one of our recent scholarship winners from NC State University. Mary Ellen Johnson was awarded our scholarship in 2005 and has graduated from the Paper Science and Engineering school in December 2005. Upon graduating from NC State she pledged that she would give a yearly scholarship donation directly to the Paper Science and Engineering school of NC State. This makes me proud to know that this young mind was a recipient of our donations and understands that importance of giving back to those that taught her and to those that will join her in our industry. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the NAPW-CF please contact Barbara Schiola for US donations at Barbara.Schiola@GAPAC.com or Diane Thifault for Canadian donations at dthifault@pb.kruger.com Congratulations! A warm congratulations to our member, Janice Tice from Canusa Hershman Recycling on the arrival of her new baby boy! Ryan was born on April 2nd and weighed in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces. Janice and Ryan are doing well. Chicago Paper Recycling Conference The NAPW will be hosting a booth at the upcoming Paper Recycling Conference & Trade Show, June 25 – 27 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago, IL. We will be holding several prize drawings for $25 dinner gift cards for all current members & new members who sign up on the spot who stop by our booth. We will also be holding a raffle for a package of golf items which all proceeds benefiting the Charitable Foundation. Please stop by the booth to check out our new display board and network with our members. We have also ordered new promotional items so be the first to get yours in Chicago. New York Annual Meeting & Luncheon Summary – by Jennifer Smith Our annual Members Meeting and Luncheon was held on Monday, April 10th at the Marriott East Side Hotel in New York, NY. We had a wonderful turnout and the networking between the guests was a success! The NAPW would like to thank Ken Grenier and Mike Davies of Paper Link for sponsoring the wine service at our luncheon for the 2nd year in a row. Cheers! We were honored to have Ms. Robin Wiener, the President of ISRI, as our keynote speaker. She eloquently spoke about the value of associations and specifically about women and associations and how each can strengthen the other. She pointed out that those who truly get the most out of any association are those who participate in the inner workings of the association. Volunteering in your industry or association is a phenomenal way to meet and get to know your industry peers and issues. I would like to share a quote from Robin’s speech that really hit home to me as to why it is I initially joined, continue to belong to and volunteer with the NAPW: “We all know that it can sometimes be very intimidating walking into a meeting and being the only woman in the room. One member of the ISRI’s Women’s Council recently told the story that when she was first promoted to the commercial side of the business, buying and selling scrap, she was very reluctant and looked to other women to find out how they survived and thrived in the business. She said it was at ISRI that the women she met gave her the insight that women can do this and that we can be good at it. Mentoring of women is especially important in such male dominated industries such as recycling. The last generation has seen more and more women enter the management of scrap recycling business. As women enter management, it is important that we foster their activities to help them make their companies even more successful. Despite often having strong male role models in the industry, women can better improve their skills and productivity when they have female role models as well. Providing role models for new women managers and providing a venue to address the successes and struggles they encounter will serve to strengthen our industry.” |
